Rats in Your Garage: Signs, Entry Points and Inspection

On This Page

Got rodents?

Talk to a rodent expert now — free inspection.

Finding signs of rats in your garage raises two practical questions: where is the activity happening, and what work would address it? Before booking service, note what you observed, when you first noticed it and whether the garage connects to your living space. Those details help you explain the situation when requesting an inspection.

Signs worth documenting

Droppings near stored food, gnawed packaging and nesting material behind boxes can indicate rodent activity. Garages with clutter can provide shelter. These clues warrant investigation; a sound or an old dropping alone does not establish the species or the size of a current problem. See UC IPM’s guide to rats for identification and management information.

Take notes or photographs from a safe distance. Do not handle suspected droppings to judge their age. CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming rodent waste because that can put contaminated particles into the air. Consult the CDC cleanup guidance before disturbing contaminated areas.

Consider the garage as part of the home

An inspection should consider accessible openings around doors and utility penetrations, along with signs of activity. A damaged door seal is worth pointing out, but spotting one gap does not establish that it is the only route into the building. Removing accessible food and shelter, trapping and reducing entry points are complementary parts of rodent management. UC IPM explains these measures.

Ask the inspector to explain which areas were accessible, what evidence was found and which openings are included in the proposed work. Keep those questions specific to your property rather than assuming every garage needs the same treatment.

What to ask before approving work

  • What signs of rat or mouse activity did the inspection identify?
  • Which accessible entry points would be addressed?
  • Does the proposed scope include trapping, rodent proofing or rodent-related cleanup?
  • What access will the team need, and what preparation is required?
  • Which follow-up or warranty terms appear on the signed invoice?

Rodent proofing addresses entry points within the approved scope. Rat control and cleanup recommendations depend on inspection findings. An inspection is the starting point for deciding what applies to your home, not a promise that every service is necessary.

Request an inspection for your home

Rodent Control Inc. provides chemical-free rat and mouse control for detached single-family homes. A free initial inspection requires the homeowner to be present. Explain whether the garage is attached or detached when contacting the office so service eligibility and access can be confirmed. Findings and recommended work are explained with a verbal on-site estimate. Work begins after approval; any warranty is governed by the signed invoice.

Request a free inspection and describe the signs you have noticed. Appointment options depend on availability.
